Main features of the most important stainless steels used in food and processing industries
W.Nr. 1.4301 - Aisi 304
Austenite 18/10 Cr-Ni steel, acid resistant, due to low % of carbon intercrystalline resistance after welding at sheet thickness up to 6 mm even without later thermal processing. Allowed for temperatures up to 300°C. Welding good in all electric processes. Gas welding not allowed. Highly polishable and good reshaping ability by means of deep drawing, roll-forming, etc.
Due to cold hardening tendency, it is necessary to apply sharp ground tools made of high-speed cutting steel or hard metal when cutting.
Application:
Steel is resistant to water, water vapour, air humidity, consumable acids, as well as to weak organic and inorganic acids and offers multiple possibilities of application, for instance in food and drinks industry, dairy industry, brewing and wine-making, pharmacology and cosmetic industry, chemical devices, chemicals, architecture, automobile industry, household appliances, surgical instruments, sanitary equipment, etc.
W.Nr. 1.4306 - Aisi 304L
Austenite 18/10 Cr-Ni steel, acid resistant, very low share of carbon leading to increased intercrystalline resistance. Even sheets over 6 mm thick require no additional processing.
Welding good in all electric processes, but gas welding is not allowed.
Very good polishability.
For orientation purposes only, max. application temperature is 350°C, for cold rolled steels 300°C.
Due to very low share of carbon, hardness, toughness and elastic limit in quenched state are particularly low, lower than in other austenite Cr-Ni steels.
This enables particularly good cold forming.
Due to cold hardening tendency, it is necessary to apply sharp ground tools made of high-speed cutting steel or hard metal when cutting.
Application:
Chemical stability is comparable to the one of W.Nr. 1.4301, so that application possibilities are the same. Cold forming ability is even better. For chemical, food, nuclear industries...
W.Nr. 1.4401 - Aisi 316
Austenite Cr-Ni steel, alloyed with Mi, highly corrosion resistant. Resistant to intercrystalline corrosion for sheet thickness up to 6 mm, i.e. up to 40 mm in profile diameter. Allowed for working temperatures up to 300° C. Highly polishable.
Application:
Devices, pipings and fittings in chemical industry, paper and cellulose industry, film and photo industry, as well as for surgical and medical instruments. Also suitable for the production of fruit juices and liquors, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks where taste cannot be compromised.
W.Nr. 1.4436 - Aisi 316
Austenite 17/13/13 Cr-Ni steel, acid resistant, increased resistance to corrosion due to increased molybdenum content, with particularly reduced pitting corrosion. Due to low carbon content, after welding of sheets up to 6 mm, this steel is resistant to intercrystaline corrosion even without additional thermal processing. Allowed for temperatures up to 300°C. Welding good in all electric processes, but gas welding is not allowed.
Very good polishability, particularly good forming ability by deep drawing, trimming of rough edges, rolling, etc.
Due to cold hardening tendency, it is necessary to apply sharp ground tools made of high-alloyed, high-speed cutting steel or hard metal when cutting.
Application:
This steel is used for components, devices and equipment in chemical industry with high chemical requirements, especially in the case of media with halogen and non-oxydizing acids content and also where qualities with lower Mo content are no longer sufficient. Primary application areas are cellulose and pharmaceutical industries. Among other, applications are the same as with W.Nr. 1.4571.
W.Nr. 1.4404 - Aisi 316L
Austenite Cr-Ni steel, alloyed with Mo, with very low carbon content.
Allowed for temperatures up to 400°C.
Application:
Equipment in chemical industry, dairy industry.
W.Nr. 1.4541 - Aisi 321
Austenite 18/10 Cr-Ni acid resistant steel, stabilized by addition of titanium. Due to that, it possesses intercrystalline stability after welding even without additional thermal processing. for pressure vessels, this steel is allowed for working temperatures up to 400°C.
Welding good in all electric processes, but gas welding is not allowed.
Due to addition of titanium, not highly polishable. Forming by deep drawing, trimming of rough edges, rolling, etc. is good.
Due to cold hardening tendency, it is necessary to apply sharp ground tools made of high-alloyed, high-speed cutting steel or hard metal when processing by chip removal.
Application:
Chemical resistance the same as W.Nr. 1.4301, so that application is also similar, unless high polish surface is required. W.Nr. 1.4541 is particularly suitable for constructions with sheet thickness over 6mm, that cannot be thermally processed after welding.
W.Nr. 1.4571 - Aisi 316Ti
Austenite 17/12/2 Cr-Ni-Mo steel, resistant to acid, stabilized by titanium. Allowed for working temperatures up to 400°C.
Due to addition of Mo, demonstrates higher resistance to acids. Due to stabilization with Ti, no thermal processing is needed after welding of higher thicknesses. Welding good in all electric processes, but gas welding is not allowed.
Due to addition of titanium, not highly polishable. Forming by deep drawing, rolling, etc. is good. Due to cold hardening tendency, it is necessary to apply sharp ground tools made of high-alloyed, high-speed cutting steel or hard metal when cutting.
Application:
This steel is suitable for construction parts, devices and equipment in chemical industry, especially in the case of media with halogen and non-oxydizing acids content, where qualities without molybdenum content are no longer sufficient.
Higher elastic limit is an advantage for constructions and construction elements with higher mechanical requirements.
Areas of application are cellulose industry, textile industry, manufacturing of fertilisers, artificial materials and fuels, photo-industry, pharmaceutical industry.
